A 19 year old boy committed suicide on Tuesday near Mkoba 1 Shopping Center, after his mother allegedly refused to accept that he had impregnated his girlfriend.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko said investigations into the death are underway on why Ayanda Phiri, known in his area as Dholo hanged himself on a tower light.
In a WhatsApp message sent to his father Moses Phiri, the teenager explained why he had committed suicide and apologised for also stealing from his father.
He requested that his father should take care of his unborn child and his belongings should be given to his young brother.
His young brother, Diva told The Sun crew that he was shocked by his brother’s sudden suicide as they were together just before he died and never showed any signs of emotional challenges.
“My brother was very quiet and we got along very well,” explained Phiri in a sorrowful tone.
His suicide seriously affected mostly Bumburwi `primary school children who were forced to see the dead body hanging from the tower light on Tuesday morning on their way to school.

However, Phiri’s friends alleged that they noticed his behaviour change two days before he killed himself.
“For two days, he had been distant and he had not been coming over to chill with us like he always does, besides that he was very reserved and quiet and we got along well with people,” said one of his friends who refused to be named.
