Police have intensified the war on drugs yielding impressive results of 148 drug offenders being apprehended in the Midlands Province.
Speaking at a drug and substance abuse awareness campaign in Gweru, Officer Commanding Gweru District Chief Superintendent Enock Chishiri said that of 148 drug offenders 42 of the arrests were suspected to be drug lords.
“The figures are concerning, out of 148 arrests we made since January up to September 42 of the arrested were suspected to be drug lords and peddlers underscoring the reach of illegal drug networks.”
“We are seeing both peddling and consumption on the rise creating a dual crisis that threatens individuals and the broader community.”
Chishiri went on to urge residents and communities to report any drug activities in their communities to prevent the pandemic the country is facing.
“Out of the total arrests, 106 people were apprehended for drug and substance use signaling an urgent need for both preventive measures and rehabilitation options.”
“As authorities, we continue to urge residents to report drug activities and participate in efforts to curb this troubling trend.”
The government launched the Zimbabwe Multi-Sectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan (2024-2030) in June this year.
The comprehensive plan developed through a collaborative effort involving various government ministries, agencies, and stakeholders aiming to create a healthy and secure Nation free from illicit drugs and substances over the next six years.
The successful crackdown on drug-related activity has significantly improved public safety and reduced the threat of substance in the province.
This achievement sets a promising precedent for future operations solidifying the police’s reputation as a formidable opponent against drug and substance abuse.
