Gweru sports club commended

Dispute over the Gweru City Council’s proposed move to relocate Gweru Sports Club (GSC) might be over after the intervention of the Sports and Recreation Commission.


Major progressing facelifts at Over the previous years, council was pushing ahead with a resolution to rezone the land where the sports club is located into a business area zone, a move which was opposed by many.
Sports and Recreation Commission delegation visited the GSC to assess restorative facelift work being done at the club including the proposed establishment of an A-list plaid sports turf.


SRC Commissioner Colleen de Jongh promised to help further continuous endeavors driven by means of private associations.


“As a commission, it’s simply uplifting for us to see the work that is being done here, I think this is a great influence to many clubs nationwide. I’m blown away by what has been achieved in a small space of time and it is wonderful to note that Gweru has a very supportive community that promotes great sportsmen.

“And about the municipalities that are abusing sports land, as a commission we do not expect the council to interfere and we strongly disagree and we promise to look into that as well. The club is working as a recreational and sporting facility, that should not change.


“We have a number of plans in place for joint ventures with clubs that are productive and as the recreational council we will work with great partnership, this wonderful sporting facilities. We appreciate and thank you for your hard work,” added de Jongh.


Out-spoken Gweru Sports Club president John Makuwalo said they have joined forces with different partners, such as Sheasham, Two Keys, and Golden Pilsner in the restoration of the games center point with an end goal of re-visitation of its unique position.


The Gweru Sports which was before a center point of most Midlands donning exercises and home for top world athletes, has off late been a feeble open space leaving it helpless against the control by the city’s council in a veined offer to lease the sporting offices, halls and further sold some of its grounds to investors that have constructed shopping centers and clinical focuses.
