Mille Gwanzura (40) from Ngandu village under chief Matemavi currently residing in Riverside was convicted and sentenced to effective 15 years in prison for raping a mentally challenged woman (name withheld) in Gweru.
Initially, Gweru Regional Magistrate Mrs Phatekile Msipa sentenced Gwanzura for 17 years and suspended two years that he will not commit the same offence for the next five years .
Delivering the sentence Mrs Msipa said ” Gwanzura took advantage of the complainant’s mental status and raped her, hence he deserved a long custodial sentence”.
It is the state case that on the 20th of July 2020 around 1500hrs along the pathway at an open space in Riverside Gweru, Gwanzura came from behind, grabbed the complainant by the waist, dragged her off the path to the plastic house which normally is used by street kids and raped her once.
The court heard, Gwanzura forced the complainant to lie on the ground facing upwards, pull down her skin tight, lowered his trousers, withdraw his private part, inserted into her and had sexual intercourse without consent.
Gwanzura, the court heard was caught red handed by Benjamin Mhanga who heard the screaming voice from the plastic house and promptly reported the matter to the police who acted swiftly and arrested him.
